Switzerland have no fresh injury concerns to report.
When is Kick-Off?
Spain meet Switzerland at Stadion Wankdorf, Bern, Switzerland, on Friday 18 July at 9pm CEST (8pm UK Time), live on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK.
Stat Attack
- This is Spain’s first meeting against Switzerland at UEFA Women’s Euro Finals.
- Switzerland have avoided defeat in four of their six previous clashes against Spain within this competition, albeit in Qualifying stages rather than main tournament (W3, D1, L2).
- Spain have won just one of three meetings against Switzerland during the Qualifying stages played on Swiss soil (W1, L2), which came in a 3-0 win in June 1986 as both teams failed to qualify for the 1987 edition.
- Esther Gonzalez has scored four goals in Spain’s three matches so far at this tournament (W3).
- Three of Switzerland’s four goals in the group stage came after half time (W1, D1, L1).
Prediction
Having topped Group B unbeaten and survived two fierce but different tests in their last two group matches against Belgium and Italy respectively, Spain will feel that this tournament is theirs to lose but they just need to stay focused but improved defensively if want to avoid an upset.
Switzerland meanwhile were lucky to finish runner-up in Group A through a late equaliser against Finland after conceding a careless penalty, so a massive improvement is needed if they’re to stand any chance as underdogs of progressing and keeping the home dreams alive.
Spain however will surely prove too strong if the Swiss play as lacklustre as they did for much of the Finland game, even though they’ve lost their last two visits in this competition as this is a very different side to those two trips.
Prediction: Spain 3-0 Switzerland
Result: Spain 2-0 Switzerland
