When is Kick-Off?
Sweden meet England at Stadium Letzigrund, Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday 17 July at 9pm CEST (8pm UK Time), live on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK.
Stat Attack
- Across five single-leg meetings at UEFA Women’s Euro between Sweden and England, the Swedes lost just one of those five clashes (W3, D1, L1).
- England have won just one of two previous single-leg knockout stage matches against Sweden in this competition (W1, L1), having prevailed 4-0 in 2022 edition but lost 3-2 in 1987 edition at semi-final stage respectively.
- This is the first Quarter-Final tie that Sweden and England have contested in a major tournament, with both teams having never met in this specific round in all competitions before.
- Stina Blackstenius and Lina Hurtig scored in each of Sweden’s last two matches (W2).
- Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone have scored in both of England’s last two matches (W2).
Prediction
With their 4-0 loss to England at the semi-final stage of the 2022 tournament likely to be in the back of their mind, Sweden will surely use that heartache as motivation because their counter-attacking performances in the group stage were pure ruthless especially against Germany.
England though looked like the reigning champions that they should be after dominant well-controlled displays against Netherlands and Wales, which they need to continue here because if they revert to the standard saw against France then their title defence will surely be over.
I however expect this clash to be fiercely close after they drew in both meetings during the Qualifying Phase in two tightly-fought battles, but whoever ultimately takes the lead should have enough quality to snatch the win.
Prediction: Sweden 1-2 England
Result: Sweden 2-2 (AET) England (England win 3-2 on penalties)
