Roundup of the opening matchday of the group stage as UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 got underway.
England came into the tournament as reigning champions but found themselves in the group of death, whilst title favourites – Spain and Germany laid down their markers in an emotional but competitive opening round of fixtures.

Julia Stierli’s 58th-minute own-goal gifted Norway a comeback 2-1 victory over tournament hosts, Switzerland to top Group A, after Ada Hegerberg cancelled out Nadine Riesen’s 28th-minute opening strike.
Katariina Kosola curled in a 70th-minute winner as Finland won the opening match of the tournament by a 1-0 result against ten-women Iceland, after Hildur Antonsdottir was red carded for a 58th-minute off-the-ball foul on Eveliina Summanen.

Group B
Esther Gonzalez’s first-half brace plus goals from Vicky Lopez, Alexia Putellas and Cristina Martin-Prieto saw Spain romp to a dominant group-topping 5-0 victory over Portugal on a difficult night, as both teams remembered Portugal Men’s forward, Diogo Jota who was killed in a car accident hours earlier.
Arianna Caruso netted a 44th-minute winner to put Italy second in the group as they battled to a narrow victory over Belgium.

Group C
Second-half goals from Jule Brand and Lea Schuller saw Germany open their campaign with a clinical 2-0 victory over tournament debutant, Poland, despite losing their captain – Giulia Gwinn to a tournament-ending medial ligament injury.
Filippa Angeldahl tucked away a 55th-minute winner in an one-two pass with Kosovare Asllani as Sweden edged past Denmark in Geneva.

Vivianne Miedema scored her 100th international goal to put Netherlands top of Group D with a 3-0 victory over tournament debutants, Wales, as Victoria Pelova and Esmee Brugts completed a dominant display.
First-half goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore saw France clinch a 2-1 victory over defending champions, England, as Keira Walsh’s strike couldn’t prevent the Lionesses becoming the first title holders to lose their opening group match in this competition.
