UEFA Women’s Euro 2025: Group D – Wales vs Netherlands

Wales meet Netherlands in the opening match of Group D as both teams look to lay an early marker in their quest to escape the group stage.

Wales are making their tournament debut, whilst the Dutch are making their fifth appearance at the finals of this competition.

Team News

Wales will be without defender, Mayzee Davies after she suffered an ACL injury in their penultimate Women’s Nations League match in late May.

Netherlands have no fresh injury concerns to report coming into this match, with Vivianne Miedema set to lead the line as she chases her 100th international goal.

When is Kick-Off?

Wales meet Netherlands at Swissporarena, Lucerne, Switzerland, live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • This is Wales’ first meeting against Netherlands at UEFA Women’s Euro Finals.
  • Netherlands have won their two previous meetings against Wales across all stages of UEFA Women’s Euro (W2), as they won 2-1 at home and 1-0 away in Qualifying for 2009 edition.
  • Ex Dutch forward, Manon Melis scored in both of their two previous UEFA Women’s Euro clashes against Wales.
  • Wales are yet to win a single game in 2025 (D2, L4).
  • Miedema has scored three goals in two of Netherlands’ last four matches.

Prediction

Without a single win this year and considered massive underdogs in a tricky tournament debut group, Wales really need to put in a huge performance defensively to quieten the Dutch’s strong attack but still be clinical up front.

I however do expect Netherlands to view this as their chance to lay a marker ahead of their crunch second group game against England, especially given the attacking quality at their disposal who won’t face an easier group opener than this.

In fact unless Wales score first and sit deep defensively, I can’t see the Dutch losing this but the Welsh should nick a goal if lucky.

Prediction: Wales 1-3 Netherlands

Result: Wales 0-3 Netherlands
