West Bromwich Albion have signed defender, Nat Phillips from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.
Phillips had spent the last nine years at Anfield – following his move from Bolton – where he graduated into the senior team and scored one goal in 29 appearances, amidst loan spells at Stuttgart, Bournemouth, Celtic, Cardiff and Derby County.
His consistency at Derby last season with one goal in 33 appearances saw him finally find consistency and persuaded West Brom to make a successful bid, with Phillips having joined the Baggies on a three-year contract until June 2028.
The 28-year-old explained that he believes West Brom is the right fit in terms of his ambitions and is keen to fight for promotion to the Premier League this coming season.
“A big factor was that this is obviously a big club with high aspirations – and I’d say those aspirations align with mine.
“I think everyone at the club and involved would like to see it competing for promotion and pushing for Premier League football – and that’s the same as me.”
Phillips also addressed his desire for regular game time and is now keen to try and replicate his form from Derby coming into this season, whilst developing a stable relationship with the club.
“Throughout my career I’ve always wanted to develop a rhythm and continue to play week in, week out. I feel like I did that in the second half of last season, and I want to continue that rhythm and try to take that into the season coming up.
“I’ve had a number of loans over the past few years and it’ll be really nice for me and my family to go somewhere and know we’re staying there to develop a relationship with the club and the fans.”
West Brom’s Sporting Director, Andrew Nestor added that Phillips “has valuable experience as he knows the division well, has also competed at a top club like Liverpool and in leagues outside of England.”
Nestor also spoke of Phillips’ leadership skills which will boost their defensive unit as he hits his peak years as a defender.
“Nat will bolster an already strong back line and brings with him leadership qualities, which really stood out for us.
“We believe he is entering his peak years as a centre-back, and hope to see him develop even further with us here as a player and leader within our group.”
