Liverpool have signed defender, Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in a £29.5m transfer deal.
Following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to depart Anfield on a free transfer for Real Madrid albeit with an early release fee on 1 June, Liverpool have acted swiftly to recruit Frimpong as the England international’s replacement and ultimately met the 24 year-old’s £29.5m release clause.
Frimpong has signed a long-term contract until June 20… and is considered a strong replacement for Alexander-Arnold, given his ability at right-back as well as versatility to be deployed as a right winger if required.
In his first interview with Liverpoolfc.com, an excited Frimpong explained that his move “was a no-brainer.”
“Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together.
“I’m just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won’t let you guys down and I’ll give you the energy that you guys want.”
Frimpong began his career within Manchester City’s youth academy before he switched to Celtic in September 2019 where he helped the Hoops achieve a domestic treble in his first season, whilst he also netted three goals in 51 appearances.
His performances persuaded Leverkusen to sign him in January 2021 and he has since gone on to net 30 goals in 190 appearances, during which he helped the club to the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal titles last season followed by DFL Supercup at the start of this season.
