Liverpool defender and captain, Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract at the club.

Van Dijk’s decision to sign a new contract comes after the Reds’ third-best all-time goalscorer, Mohamed Salah signed a new deal just last week, whilst he scored his most recent goal for Liverpool just a few days ago in a 2-1 home victory over West Ham in which he headed in the match-winner.

“I’m very happy, very proud,” commented Van Dijk in an interview to Liverpoolfc.com. “There are so many emotions obviously that go through my head right now speaking about it.

“It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy.”

Van Dijk proceeded to explain that he had no intention of letting his contract expire and leave on a free transfer as he viewed the club as the ideal place for him.

“It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool.

“There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.”

Since Van Dijk joined Liverpool in January 2018, the Reds have won every major trophy which included two EFL Cup titles plus Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FA Community Shield and FIFA Club World Cup.
