Yankuba Minteh’s brace plus Kaoru Mitoma’s strike saw Brighton condemn Chelsea to Valentine’s Day heartbreak with a 3-0 Premier League win at the AMEX Stadium.
Following a tense opening 26 minutes, Mitoma fired Brighton ahead from Bart Verbruggen’s long ball which saw him outmuscle Trevoh Chalobah to put his shot away.
Minteh added Brighton’s second and third goals from a pair of assists by Danny Welbeck; courtesy of the England international’s lay-off pass in the 38th minute, followed by a return pass in an one-two move in the 63rd minute.
This result lifted Brighton up to eighth in the table, whilst Chelsea remain fourth but can be displaced if results go against them tomorrow (15 February).
Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Minteh praised his teammates for their roles in the victory and motivating him to become a better player.
“I think the compactness of the team was good and the team always communicate with me and push me.”
Barely a week on from their FA Cup heartbreak at the AMEX Stadium, Chelsea returned looking for a more lusty ending but failed to take advantage of the first attacking opportunity in the fourth minute, as Malo Gusto burst up the right flank but Cole Palmer fired wide from the Frenchman’s cutback pass.
Chelsea were soon dealt some tough Valentine Day pain after Noni Madueke was forced off with a hamstring injury, having picked up the issue as he set up Palmer with a 18th minute cutback pass which was put wide.
Brighton in comparison enjoyed a defensively organised start to the game and got lucky with Verbruggen’s 27th minute long ball, which fell for Mitoma to outmuscle Trevoh Chalobah as he cut to his right to roll in the opening goal beyond Filip Jorgensen.
Enzo Fernandez almost restored parity on Chelsea’s first proper response with his 35th minute header from a cross on the left, but the Argentinean’s effort was disallowed due to his shove on Joel Veltman as he met the delivery.
Brighton soon compounded Chelsea’s loveless misery with a well-worked second goal three minutes later started by Georginio Rutter’s low cross, which Levi Colwill deflected towards Welbeck who teed up Minteh to fire in from close-range to put the Seagulls in control at half-time.
Any hope that Chelsea had of pumping life back into the fixture almost were dashed in the 51st minute if not for Minteh hitting his shot over the bar from Welbeck’s cutback pass.
Those faint flames were ultimately extinguished in the 63rd minute after Minteh won possession and played an one-two move with Welbeck into the box, from which the 20 year-old smashed his second goal of the game into the net to put the hosts three goals to the good.
Chelsea’s miserable blushes were spared further agony after Filip Jorgensen denied Mitoma a second goal then saved a shot from substitute, Joao Pedro in the space of two minutes, before Joao Pedro then headed wide from a 78th minute free-kick following Tyrique George’s handball for the visitors.
Brighton continued to press but wasted two huge chances in the 85th minute which saw substitute, Yasin Ayari tee up Veltman who flicked his shot onto the right post, before Ayari then smashed his own shot over the bar moments later.
Fabian Hürzeler’s Seagulls ultimately settled for a 3-0 victory which saw them claim consecutive home wins over Chelsea for the first time in all competitions.

Brighton head to relegation-battling Southampton on Saturday 22 February in a 3pm GMT kick-off at St Mary’s Stadium.
Chelsea will too be in action on that date but at 5:30pm in a tough trip to fellow top-four chasing rival, Aston Villa at Villa Park.
