Roundup of midweek Championship action which saw the battle for promotion and survival grow closer.

League leaders, Sunderland stuttered to another goalless draw as they were held to a 0-0 result at Preston.

Harrison Burrows’ 98th minute strike fired Sheffield United up to second with a 2-1 comeback win at Bristol City, as the hosts’ Rob Dickie was red carded minutes after Anis Mehmeti’s penalty was cancelled out by Ryan One’s equaliser.

Japhet Tanganga’s 40th minute volley saw Millwall climb to sixth with a 1-0 win over third-placed Leeds.

West Brom climbed to fifth with a goalless draw at home to fourth-placed Burnley.

Watford sat outside of the top six on goal difference following a 1-0 loss at Swansea, in which Myles Peart-Harris netted a 35th minute winner.

Down in the relegation zone, rock-bottom Portsmouth got cut six points adrift of safety following a 1-0 loss at third-bottom Plymouth, as Michael Obafemi’s 82nd minute strike proved the difference for Argyle.

Anfernee Dijksteel’s own-goal couldn’t prevent second-bottom QPR suffering a 4-1 loss at home to Middlesbrough, with Riley McGree, Tommy Conway, Emmanuel Latte Lath and Daniel Barlaser on the scoresheet for the visitors.

Amongst five clubs above the drop on goal difference, Cardiff sat fourth-bottom following a 1-0 loss at Luton through Jacob Brown’s headed second-half winner.

Elsewhere, Mark Robins was sacked following Coventry’s 2-1 loss to Derby in which Jerry Yates’ strike and Bobby Thomas’ own-goal secured victory for the Rams, despite Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s consolatory goal.

First-half goals from Josh Windass and Dominic Iofra saw Sheffield Wednesday beat Norwich 2-0 at Hillsborough.

Million Manhoef’s strike and Tom Cannon’s penalty saw Blackburn’s winless run to four matches following a 2-0 loss to Stoke.

Finally, Hidde ter Avest’s volley saw Oxford United end their eight-match winless run with a 1-0 home win over Hull.
