2024-25 Sky Bet Championship: Week Eight Roundup

Roundup of a dramatic first midweek round of the 2024-25 Championship season. 

Jobe Bellingham’s 25-yard strike and Wilson Isidor’s effort saw Sunderland beat Derby 2-0 at home to return to the summit.

Josh Brownhill netted a 26th minute winner from the penalty spot as Burnley edged out Plymouth at Turf Moor to go second.

Josh Tymon’s 44th minute own-goal saw Sheffield United climb to third with a narrow home win over Swansea.

West Brom consequently fell from top spot to fourth with a 1-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough, as Hayden Hackney netted a 73rd minute winner for Boro.

Largie Ramazani’s equaliser saw fifth-placed Leeds snatch a 1-1 draw at Norwich, after Josh Sargent had fired the Canaries ahead from the penalty spot.

Blackburn rounded out the top six despite a first league defeat of the season as they fell 3-0 at Coventry, with Jake Bidwell having headed the Sky Blues ahead before Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante completed the hosts’ win.

Down in the relegation zone, rock-bottom Cardiff claimed their first win of the season after Perry Ng’s 39th minute header saw off Millwall.

Mark O’Mahony’s 29th minute effort couldn’t prevent second-bottom Portsmouth losing 6-1 at Stoke, as Tom Cannon netted four goals whilst Sam Gallagher and Andrew Moran also scored for the Potters.

QPR slipped to third-bottom after Nicolas Madsen’s penalty couldn’t prevent a 3-1 loss to Hull at home, as Cody Drameh, Chris Bedia and Liam Millar netted for the Tigers.

Elsewhere, Milutin Osmajic’s brace lifted Preston out of the relegation zone with a 3-0 home win over Watford, with Alistair McCann’s screamer completing the rout.

Goals from Tyler Goodrham and Ruben Rodrigues saw Oxford United fight back to draw 2-2 at Luton, having fallen behind to Jordan Clark and Tom Krauss’ efforts before Hatters’ substitute – Liam Walsh was sent off a minute after he came on.

Bristol City held Sheffield Wednesday to a goalless draw at Ashton Gate.
