Southampton host fellow promoted club, Ipswich in a Premier League contest at St Mary’s Stadium.
Victory would lift Southampton out of the relegation zone, whilst Ipswich can potentially move four points clear of the drop with a win.
Team News
Jack Stephens is suspended for Southampton as he serves the second of his three-match ban, following his red card in their 3-0 league loss against Manchester United last weekend.
Will Smallbone (thigh) is a doubt but Gavin Bazunu (Achilles) and Kamaldeen Sulemana (ankle) remain ruled out.
Ipswich could welcome Nathan Broadhead (hamstring) back into contention, with no further issues to report after their goalless draw at Brighton.
Harry Clarke (Achilles) remains sidelined.
When is Kick-Off?
Southampton host Ipswich at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday 21 September at 3pm BST, untelevised live in the UK.
Stat Attack
- Southampton have won one of five previous Premier League meetings against Ipswich (W1, D1, L3).
- Ipswich have claimed seven points in five previous Premier League trips to Southampton (W2, D1, L2), which included a 3-3 draw in their only previous top-flight visit to St Mary’s.
- Southampton have scored at least three goals in three of their five previous Premier League matches at home to Ipswich.
- Russell Martin’s Saints have scored one goal and conceded eight goals in their opening four league matches this season.
- Sam Morsy has been booked in each of Ipswich’s two away matches in the league this season.
Prediction
Having fought back to beat Everton on penalties in the Carabao Cup in midweek, Southampton need to hope that it marked a turning point after some sloppy defensive displays amidst wasted chances on the attack.
Ipswich meanwhile have settled well into the top-flight despite taking no wins but they grinded out a goalless draw at Brighton, which is no mean feat but they must show their attacking quality more in this game.
If Kieran McKenna’s Tractor Boys can do that then you’ve to feel that this could be theirs to lose if can target the Saints’ defence, but I do suspect that Southampton might of now found their groove again and could nick a point.
Prediction: Southampton 1-1 Ipswich
Result: Southampton 1-1 Ipswich
