Andrea Kimi Antonelli will replace George Russell at Mercedes for FP1 at 2024 Italian Grand Prix.
Antonelli is widely tipped to be unveiled as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement at Mercedes for next season, but will get his first taste of a proper F1 race weekend outing in Monza as he replaces Russell for FP1.
Antonelli has described this chance as a “really special” opportunity for him, whilst also competing in F2 at the same round for PREMA.
“I’m really excited to drive the W15 and share the track with so many amazing drivers. I can’t wait for it!”
Antonelli’s debut FP1 run in F1 also comes at the second Italian event on the calendar, and the 18 year-old is excited to jump into the cockpit on home soil whilst helping Mercedes prepare for the rest of the weekend.
“Making my F1 session debut in front of my home crowd too is incredible.
“I’m looking forward to learning a lot but also helping contribute to the team’s weekend.”
It is thought that his promotion to F1 with Mercedes for next season could be announced on Saturday 31 August, according to paddock rumours.
