Ryan Lowe has decided that “now is the right time” to resign as manager of Preston North End.

Lowe was appointed as manager in December 2021 and went on to guide the Lilywhites to a 13th-placed finish that season, before he led them to 12th and 10th-placed finishes in the last two seasons.

Friday’s 2-0 home loss to Sheffield United on the opening night of the Championship however proved the final straw for Lowe, who decided to resign yesterday (11 August) which the club board duly accepted.

Lowe also released a farewell message in which he felt that “… now is the right time to move on.”

The ex Plymouth Argyle manager proceeded to explain that he is stepping down in order to allow the club to progress with a squad in place to fight for promotion.

“I think now is the right time for the club to go in a different direction. I’ve always stressed since I walked through the door that if I can’t take the club any further, I’d leave it to someone else and that’s what I’m doing.

“I’m leaving the club in a good place with a fantastic squad, and I just wish the football club and everyone associated with it all the best in the future.”

Preston issued a short message thanking Lowe for his work in consolidating the club’s second-tier status.

“Ryan leaves with the thanks of everyone at the club for his hard work, dedication and commitment, and we wish him and his family the very best for the future.”

Lowe’s farewell message can be found below in full.

Obviously, as you know, my time at Preston North End has come to an end. I’ve had an unbelievable two and a half years, met some incredible people and coached some fantastic players, but I feel now is the right time to move on.

I’ve had an unbelievable time working with Peter Ridsdale over the last two and a half years. Thank you to Peter, Craig Hemmings and the Hemmings family for their support and backing and giving me the opportunity to manage a fantastic football club and establish myself as a Championship manager.

A big thank you also goes to the players past and present for their attitude and application during my time as manager. I’d also like to thank the fans for their support during my tenure.

I think now is the right time for the club to go in a different direction. I’ve always stressed since I walked through the door that if I can’t take the club any further, I’d leave it to someone else and that’s what I’m doing.

I’m leaving the club in a good place with a fantastic squad, and I just wish the football club and everyone associated with it all the best in the future.
