2024-25 Sky Bet Championship: Week One – Sunday

Two of last season’s final-day survivors collide as Sheffield Wednesday host Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough.

Having both secured survival on the final day of last season, Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth will both seek a strong start to the new campaign.

Team News

Sheffield Wednesday have no fresh injury concerns but Ben Hamer, Jamal Lowe and Max Lowe could be amongst new arrivals who make their first competitive starts here.

Plymouth will have Joe Edwards plus Darko Gyabi available after the pair missed recent pre-season friendlies, due to unspecified injuries.

When is Kick-Off?

Sheffield Wednesday host Plymouth at Hillsborough on Sunday 11 August at 4pm BST, live on Sky Sports Football in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Sheffield Wednesday have won three of their last five meetings against Plymouth (W3, L2).
  • Plymouth have won one of their last five league trips to Hillsborough (W1, L4).
  • Sheffield Wednesday have won each of their last two home matches against Plymouth by 1-0 result.
  • Three of Sheffield Wednesday’s four goals in pre-season were scored after half-time.
  • Ryan Hardie scored four goals in five pre-season appearances for Plymouth.

Prediction

Unbeaten in seven of their last eight matches at the conclusion of last season, Sheffield Wednesday can come into this season with some confidence and solid new signings – who will hopefully help steer the Owls to a stronger season.

Plymouth meanwhile have done a cracking job to cling onto Morgan Whittaker and Ryan Hardie so far in this window, because those two players could well be key especially if can more consistency than in second half of last season.

Danny Rohl’s Owls however do seem like they’re on a roll and despite a tough pre-season, I can see them getting a result to open the campaign in style.

Prediction: Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Plymouth Argyle

Result: Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 Plymouth Argyle
