UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 Qualifiers: Sweden vs England

Sweden host England in a must-win showdown in Gothenburg with UEFA Women’s Euro qualification at stake.

Victory would see Sweden finish second in the group and automatically qualify for next summer’s tournament, otherwise they will face the play-offs if they draw or lose this game.

England simply need to avoid defeat to secure their place at the tournament.

Sweden have no fresh injury concerns to report following their 2-1 loss away to France last Friday evening.

England manager, Sarina Wiegman could rotate her squad following their 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland, with Mary Earps, Lucy Bronze and Ella Toone amongst those looking for a start in Gothenburg.

• England are winless in four previous away trips to Sweden (D1, L3).
• Sweden have scored 10 goals and conceded twice in four home matches against England in all competition.
• In their two previous home qualifiers in this group, Sweden have taken one win and loss apiece by 1-0 result.
• England are yet to lose to Sweden in two matches in all competitions under Sarina Wiegman (W1, D1), with Alessia Russo having scored in both games albeit at home.

 

Prediction

Following their narrow loss to France after coming from behind, Sweden now simply know that this is must-win if they want to automatically qualify so I expect them to try and score first to put their fate in their own hands.

England though know that a draw would be enough to secure their spot at next summer’s Euros, but they must be more clinical and fluid than they were in a largely dominant but sloppy win over Ireland.

Either way this match will be viewed as must-win by both teams for different reasons but I do fancy the Lionesses to snatch a draw, although they did win their last away game in France which will give them confidence coming into this game.
