*England beat Switzerland 5-3 on penalties after 1-1 draw following extra time
England opened their campaign with a 13th minute winner over Serbia courtesy of Jude Bellingham, before Harry Kane’s goal was cancelled out by Morten Hjulmand in a 1-1 draw against Denmark, yet a goalless draw against Slovenia proved enough for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions to top Group C.
Kane headed in an extra-time winner as England came from behind to beat Slovakia 2-1 in the Round of 16, having needed an injury-time equaliser from Bellingham to cancel out Ivan Schranz’s opening goal.
Bukayo Saka spared England’s blushes in the Quarter-Final with an 80th minute equaliser just five minutes after Dan Ndoye put Switzerland in front, yet the tie went to penalties after extra-time with the Euro 2020 runners-up scoring all five spot kicks to win the shootout 5-3.
Ollie Watkins struck a 90th minute winner to complete a semi-final comeback by 2-1 result over Netherlands, after Kane’s penalty cancelled out Xavi Simons’ strike.
Stat Attack
- Spain are yet to beat England at the Euros after two previous meetings in this competition (D1, L2).
- England won their only previous UEFA Euros meeting against Spain on foreign soil (W1), which came in a 2-1 win in the Group Stage of 1980 Euros in Naples, Italy.
- Including Qualifying, Spain have conceded in three of their four previous Euros meetings against England except for a 0-0 draw at Euro 1996 which the Three Lions won on penalties.
- Spain have won three of their four previous appearances in the Euros Final (W3, L1).
- England drew their only previous Euros Final but lost on penalties to Italy after a 1-1 draw in Euro 2020.
Prediction
As the best performing team at this tournament, all eyes will be on Spain because they have often been solid defensively, which was particularly evident in a resilient second half against France but their attacking firepower is their best weapon having been clinical consistently.
England though are a team full of grit and quality plus have the experience of this sort of final – give or take Spain’s Nations League success last summer, which could give them a mental edge motivation wise after the heartbreak of Euro 2020.
England’s men will also have additional motivation from having seen Spain deny the Lionesses at last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Final, which should hopefully give them more desire to avoid two consecutive summers where Spain beat England in a major final.
Southgate though needs to ensure that his team play with the same intensity as they did against the Dutch but be more clinical when on top, because if they revert to the displays as saw against likes of Slovenia and Slovakia, they could be in huge trouble.
Both defences though have been leaky at times in the knockout stages so I do expect this to be a see-saw battle with goals at both ends, but if England dig deep once again then they might just do this otherwise Spain could have the advantage fitness wise if extra time is needed.
Prediction: Spain 1-2 England
Result: Spain 2-1 England
