Portugal meet France in an epic Quarter-Final tie at UEFA Euro 2024.
Victory would see Portugal or France achieve a sixth semi-final appearance at the Euros.
Team News
Portugal have no fresh injury concerns to report following their penalty-shootout victory over Slovenia.
Francisco Conceicao, Joao Palhinha, Pedro Neto, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo will miss Portugal’s next game if booked here.
France will be without midfielder, Adrien Rabiot after he picked up his second booking of the tournament in their scrappy Round of 16 win over Belgium.
Aurelién Tchouameni, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe will be suspended for France’s next match if booked here.
When is Kick-Off?
Portugal take on France at Volksparkstadion, Hamburg, on Friday 5 July 9pm CEST (8pm UK Time), live on BBC1 in the UK.
Stat Attack
- Portugal have won one of four previous meetings against France in the European Championship (W1, D1, L2).
- France are winless in two previous Euro clashes against Portugal when played as the away team (D1, L1), which they lost 1-0 in Euro 2016 Final then drew 2-2 in Group F at Euro 2020.
- Both teams have scored in three of their four previous meetings at the Euros.
- Portugal have progressed from four of their six previous Quarter-Final appearances in this competition, suffering defeats to Czech Republic and Germany in 1996 and 2008 respectively.
- France have advanced in three of their five previous Quarter-Final appearances in this competition.
Prediction
Aside from their clinical Group F win over Turkey, Portugal haven’t exactly been convincing because they are clearly lacking that wow spark, and were lucky to beat Slovenia because they just lacked any clinical end product up front with constant wasted chances.
France though can’t be confident because they haven’t even scored in open play all tournament yet somehow are in the last eight, so this is the time to step up and show their quality rather than rely on luck of own-goals or a penalty.
In fact, I don’t expect much quality here based upon the performances so far from both teams and if anything, this could well be a goalless contest that goes to penalties.
Prediction: Portugal 0-0 France (Portugal to win on penalties)
Result: Portugal 0-0 France (France win 5-3 on penalties)
