Romania face Netherlands in an intriguing Round of 16 matchup at UEFA Euro 2024.
Romania qualified for this stage as Group E winners, whilst Netherlands progressed as one of the four best third-placed group finishers.
Team News
Nicusor Bancu is suspended for Romania after he was booked twice in the group stage.
Netherlands have no fresh injury concerns to report following their loss to Austria in their final Group D match.
When is Kick-Off?
Romania face Netherlands at Allianz Arena, Munich, on Tuesday 2 July at 6pm CEST (5pm UK Time), live on BBC1 in the UK.
Stat Attack
- Romania lost 2-0 in their only previous meeting against the Netherlands in the main tournament, which came in the group stage at UEFA Euro 2008.
- Including Qualifying, Netherlands have avoided defeat in two of their three previous clashes against Romania in this competition (W1, D1, L1).
- During their respective wins in this competition, both Romania and Netherlands kept clean sheets – Romania won 1-0 in Euro 2008 Qualifying & Netherlands won 2-0 in Euro 2008 Group C.
- Two of Romania’s four goals in the group phase were scored by Razvan Marin.
- Cody Gakpo scored in two of Netherlands’ three group matches in Group D.
Prediction
Having somehow scraped through as Group E winners, Romania now need to step their game up a notch but be more clinical than they were against Belgium in their second group match – which is their barometer of what to expect from the Dutch oppositional quality wise.
Netherlands meanwhile were simply outclassed by Austria at times with too many defensive errors despite twice coming from behind, but their attacking play was strong so it is a case really of just cutting out the sloppy defending.
I though do expect the Dutch to have learned from that game but if Romania can make this an end-to-end contest, anything could happen but I seriously expect the Netherlands to win this.
Prediction: Romania 1-2 Netherlands
Result: Romania 0-3 Netherlands
