UEFA Euro 2024: Round of 16 – Austria vs Turkey

Austria and Turkey bring the Round of 16 at UEFA Euro 2024 to a close in an exciting encounter.

Ralf Rangnick’s Austria qualified for this stage as surprise Group D winners, whilst Turkey progressed as Group F runner-up.

Kevin Wimmer is suspended for Austria after he was booked twice in the group stage.

Phillipp Mwene (illness) could return but Gernot Trauner (thigh) is a doubt.

Turkey will be without captain, Hakan Calhanoglu and defender, Samet Akaydin due to suspension, although Abdulkerim Bardakci is back from his one-match ban.

When is Kick-Off?

Austria face Turkey at Red Bull Arena, Leipzig, on Tuesday 2 July at 9pm CEST (8pm UK Time), live on ITV1 in the UK.

Prediction

After a sluggish opening Group D loss to France, Austria have certainly ramped up their attacking intensity and flair which certainly frustrated Poland and Netherlands, but their defence is still their Achilles heel with no clean sheets which could well be a factor here.

Turkey meanwhile are a well-drilled team which showed in their composure and patience to snatch a late win over Czech Republic in Group F, but their defence can be vulnerable like Austria so they will surely need to be wary of the Austrians’ attacking intensity if want to quieten them.

I however do see this being a close entertaining encounter with Austria just edging it but extra time certainly won’t be a shock.

Prediction: Austria 2-1 (AET) Turkey

Result: Austria 1-2 Turkey
