Southampton have signed defenders, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Charlie Taylor.

Harwood-Bellis spent last season on loan from Manchester City and produced two goals plus four assists in 46 appearances as he helped the Saints to promotion from the Championship, albeit via victory over Leeds United in the Play-Off Final.

His performances ultimately led Southampton to activate a £20m permanent transfer for the 22 year-old, who has signed a four-year contract until June 2028.

“It’s no secret how much I enjoyed being here last season, so I’m delighted to officially become a Southampton player ahead of the new season,” commented Harwood-Bellis.

Harwood-Bellis is relishing his opportunity to play in the top-flight after he spent the last two seasons in the second-tier, during which he was part of Burnley’s promotion and title-winning squad in 2022-23 season.

“The feeling of bringing this club back to the Premier League and playing in front of these fans week-in and week-out has been amazing.

“I’ve learnt a great deal over the past two years and developed so much as a player and as a person. To have the opportunity now to represent this club in the Premier League is really special and I can’t wait to get going and to see all the lads again.”

Manager, Russell Martin added: “We’ve had nothing but good words to say about Taylor since he joined the club last season. Not only with his performances but how he’s fit into the group.

“His excitement for the game is infectious and you can see how much he’s enjoyed being here.

“He’s ready now for that step up to Premier League football, and we’re really lucky to have an exciting young defender like him at our club.”

Harwood-Bellis will be reunited with his former Burnley teammate, Charlie Taylor who has left Turf Moor for the Saints on a free transfer after seven seasons playing for the Clarets, with the left-back signing a two-year contract until June 2026.

During his time at Burnley, Taylor scored one goal in 220 appearances and was part of their squad which achieved Europa League qualification in 2017-18 season, then promotion back to the Premier League in 2023 – just one season after they were relegated.

Addressing his decision to play for a Southern club for the first time in his career, Taylor said: “It just feels like the right fit. Everyone I spoke to about the club have only got great words to say. So excited and can’t wait to get started.

“We spoke briefly on the phone to begin with and straight away [Russell Martin] really impressed me. The way he talks about football is the way I like to see it too. Him being the manager was a massive pulling point.

“I feel as though it was too good an opportunity to turn down. Ever since I’ve come down here I’ve just had a good feel, surrounded by good people. It’s a huge club, back in the Premier League now. It’ll be a good experience for me.”

Martin is delighted to sign Taylor who he believes “brings a wealth of Premier League experience to the side which will be vital for us.”

The boss also praised Taylor for his personality and depth as he continued: “He’s a great character who will fit into what we’re building here. Technically he’s a gifted passer of the ball and has versatility.

“I’m delighted we’ve brought him in. It’s going to take everyone again next season, so it’s important we have competition for places across the board.”
