UEFA Euro 2024: Group Stage – England vs Slovenia

England meet Slovenia in a crunch Group C showdown in UEFA Euro 2024.

Victory would see England progress as Group C winners although a draw would be enough if Denmark fail to beat Serbia, although they are assured of a top-three finish in the group regardless.

Slovenia need a win in order to top the group should Denmark fail to win their game, whilst a draw could be enough to progress as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Luke Shaw is back in training for England after a lengthy hamstring injury which had kept him sidelined since February, although he is unlikely to be risked in the starting line-up here.

Slovenia have no fresh injury concerns to report after their 1-1 draw against Serbia.

England face Slovenia a RheinEnergieStadion, Cologne, on Tuesday 25 June at 9pm CEST (8pm UK Time), live on ITV1 in the UK.

 

Stat Attack

• This is England’s first meeting against Slovenia at UEFA European Championship Finals.
• Slovenia lost their two previous Euro meetings against England, albeit in Qualifying for Euro 2016.
• England are yet to lose to Slovenia in all competitions (W5, D1).
• Both of England’s goals in this group were scored in the opening 18 minutes.
• Slovenia are looking to become just the second team to qualify for the knockout stages with a record of three draws in group phase, after Portugal achieved that feat in 2016.

 

Prediction

After a lacklustre performance against Denmark where they simply sat back after the opening goal and were deservedly punished, England now must step it up and produce a more aggressive display that this squad are capable of delivering.

Slovenia meanwhile are simply gutsy but must refocus and put that late conceded goal against Serbia behind them, because this is a game where they will need to take their chances and be clinical in applying their attacking game upon England.

Do that then a potential shock could be on the cards but I do fancy England to produce a reaction to Europe-wide criticism of their performances, but patience might just be needed.
