UEFA Euro 2024: Group Stage – Germany v Scotland

Germany face Scotland at Allianz Arena in the opening match of UEFA Euro 2024.

Victory would see either Germany or Scotland sit top of Group A on the opening night of the tournament.

Aleksandar Pavlovic is ruled out for Germany after he was forced to withdraw from the squad due to tonsillitis, and has been replaced by Emre Can.

Scotland have no fresh injury concerns despite left-back, Andrew Robertson having suffered a minor knock to his ankle in training earlier this week.

 

When is Kick-Off?

Germany face Scotland at Allianz Arena, Munich, on Friday 14 June at 9pm CEST (8pm UK Time), live on ITV1 in the UK.

 

Stat Attack

• Germany won their only previous Euros meeting against Scotland by a 2-0 result at UEFA Euro 92 in Norrkoping (W1).
• Scotland are playing Germany as the ‘away’ team for the first at an European Championship tournament.
• The host of the opening game have avoided defeat in four of the last six Euros openers (W3, D1, L2).
• Germany have kept two clean sheets in four matches in 2024 (W3, D1).
• Scotland have won one of their last nine matches in all competitions (W1, D3, L5).

 

Prediction

Although this is their home tournament, Germany hasn’t exactly been in strong form despite the talent available but have found their feet this year under Julian Nagelsmann – following a disastrous stint under Hansi Flick for much of 2023.

There is no doubt though that Germany do boast a solid selection with players like Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz expected to shine this summer, but this does feel like a team in transition – although their goalkeeping selection could of done with a touch of youth.

Scotland meanwhile have no pressure on them in this tough group but after beating Spain during Qualifying, there is no doubt that they should have little to fear if can stop their rut with a more controlled clinical performance and cut out their defensive sloppiness.

If Steve Clarke’s Tartan Army do that then they might just get a result otherwise I do fancy Germany to open their home tournament in style.
