21 year-old forward, Benjamin Sesko has committed his future to RB Leipzig amidst interest from Premier League clubs.
Sesko joined Leipzig in August 2022 from RB Salzburg but spent the 2022-23 season on loan with Salzburg, before he officially completed his move last season where he scored 18 goals in 42 appearances as Leipzig finished fourth in Bundesliga.
His performances sparked interest from Premier League’s Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United but Sesko has signed a new five-year contract until June 2029, which effectively is an one-year extension on his previous contract which was set to expire in summer 2028.
His new deal also came after he expressed a desire to sort out his future ahead of Euro 2024 where he is representing Slovenia – who coincidentally are in the same group as England.
Speaking of his decision to stay with RB Leipzig, Sesko commented: “I had a good first year at RB Leipzig and am incredibly happy to be here. Team, club, city, fans – the overall package is simply outstanding for me. The early contract extension was therefore the logical next step for me.”
11 of Sesko’s 18 goals were scored in the second half of last season and the Slovenian is on a domestic seven-match scoring run for Leipzig, with the 21 year-old pleased with his progress from start to end of the campaign.
“Even though I didn’t play or score as much in the first half of the season, this phase was very important for me and my development. I feel a lot of trust and appreciation throughout the club and that is crucial for being able to perform to my full potential.
“In the second half of the season in particular, I was able to give something back with my goals.”
Sesko also spoke of his belief that RB Leipzig are going in a positive direction heading into next season.
“We have a team with great potential and a balanced mix of young and experienced players. I’m really looking forward to taking the next steps with this team.
“We’ve already achieved a lot in my first season and often shown the amount of quality and outstanding football we can bring to the pitch. But there’s still a lot more to be done and that’s now our common goal.”
