2023-24 Premier League: Week 37 – Tottenham vs Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur host Burnley at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a blockbuster clash, with implications at opposite ends of the Premier League table.

Angel Postecoglou’s Spurs will stay fifth regardless of the result, but defeat would end their top-four ambitions.

Burnley meanwhile will be relegated if they lose but victory could lift them up to 18th position and two points from safety, before Nottingham Forest play in the teatime kick-off which could see the Clarets suffer relegation if Forest win their game.

Tottenham have no fresh injury concerns to report following their defeat at Liverpool.

Fraser Forster (foot), Destiny Udogie (quad), Ben Davies (calf), Ryan Sessegnon, Timo Werner (both hamstring) and Manor Solomon (knee) remain absent

Burnley will have Maxime Esteve available despite the defender having missed training due to illness this week.

Jordan Beyer (thigh), Ameen Al-Dakhil (unspecified), Nathan Redmond (hamstring), Luca Koleosho and Aaron Ramsey (both knee) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Tottenham host Burnley at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 11 May at 3pm, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Tottenham have lost one of their last seven league meetings against Burnley (W5, D1, L1).
  • Burnley are winless in their last eight league visits to Tottenham (D1, L7).
  • Tottenham are yet to drop points at home to Burnley in all competitions since they moved into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (W4), during which they scored 11 goals without conceding.
  • No Spurs player has created more assists in the league this season than Son Heung-min (9).
  • Burnley have won one of their six league visits to London this season (W1, D2, L3).

Prediction

Knowing that defeat would end their top-four ambitions despite having a game in hand, Tottenham simply have to come out fighting and avoid a repeat of the sloppy performances which cost them in their last three matches.

Burnley likewise just need to be more clinical and cut out the defensive mistakes which cost them against Newcastle because they simply must win and hope results elsewhere go their way, so the pressure is on them but given the difference in quality this does feel like a free hit for them.

I however just can’t see Tottenham losing this but given the defensive issues within both teams and Burnley’s recent improved goalscoring form, I wouldn’t be surprised if they somehow nicked a draw but that does feel a tough ask given Spurs’ attacking quality.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-0 Burnley

Result: Tottenham 2-1 Burnley (Burnley are relegated)
