Max Verstappen achieved his sixth pole position of the season after he topped Qualifying for 2024 Miami Grand Prix.

Verstappen’s first Q3 time of 1m 27.241 proved enough for him to take pole from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, as Sergio Perez managed fourth ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Aston Martin meanwhile suffered a surprise Q2 double elimination, whilst Williams’ Logan Sargeant endured another tough session at his home event as he missed out on Q2 by 0.034 seconds and qualified 17th as speculation grows over his F1 future.

Now here is a full roundup of Qualifying for 2024 Miami Grand Prix.

Q1

Haas’ Kevin Magnussen was first out on track and set a benchmark 1m 29.015, which was quickly usurped by various drivers with Verstappen setting the pace on 1m 28.023 once everyone completed their opening laps.

The bottom five meanwhile compromised of; Esteban Ocon, Magnussen, Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly and Guanyu Zhou with seven minutes left, but times continued to tumble as Perez went quickest with 1m 27.772 from Sainz – as the Spaniard ran old soft tyres – and Norris.

As the checkered flag fell, Valtteri Bottas could only finish 16th fastest and was knocked out ahead of home hero, Logan Sargeant who qualified 17th and will head the penultimate row from Daniel Ricciardo, Magnussen and Zhou.

Ricciardo however has a three-place grid penalty to serve in the Grand Prix – having breached safety car rules at the Chinese GP – which meant that he would start last, with Magnussen and Zhou promoted to 18th and 19th on the grid.

Verstappen finished fastest in Q1 with 1m 27.689 ahead of his Red Bull teammate, Perez.

Q2

The second segment saw nobody in a rush to head out until RB’s Yuki Tsunoda headed a queue of cars venturing out in the third minute.

Tsunoda set a benchmark 1m 28.223 but his time was beaten by six drivers as Leclerc on fresh soft tyres went top with a Q2 topping 1m 27.533 ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

Ocon, Lewis Hamilton, Lance Stroll, Fernando Alonso and Albon compromised the bottom five once everyone had set a lap time, although Albon spun on his first flier.

At the checkered flag, Hamilton survived but Stroll qualified 11th ahead of Gasly, Ocon, Albon and Alonso.

Q3

Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg was first out onto the track and set a benchmark 1m 29.104, whilst McLaren’s Lando Norris opted to experiment with his opening lap on medium tyres which saw him post 1m 27.822 to go sixth-fastest.

Once everyone set an initial lap time, Verstappen headed the order with 1m 27.241 ahead of Leclerc, Sainz, Piastri, Perez, Norris, Russell, Hamilton, Hulkenberg and Tsunoda.

Hulkenberg again led the top ten out for the final Q3 runs but as the checkered flag fell, Verstappen claimed his sixth Grand Prix pole of the season – and seventh consecutive pole stretching back to 2023 Abu Dhabi GP – with 1m 27.241 after several drivers failed to improve on their final laps.

Like in the Sprint Race, Leclerc will start the main race from second as Sainz qualified third ahead of Perez who improved to fourth ahead of Norris – who had switched to soft tyre for his final run – with Piastri sixth.

Russell and Hamilton qualified seventh and eighth on the medium tyre ahead of Hulkenberg and Tsunoda.
