2023-24 Premier League: Week 28 – Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur

Aston Villa host Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park in a huge clash in the top-four race.

Villa will stay fourth regardless of the result but victory would move them eight points clear of Tottenham, whilst Spurs can cut their gap to Unai Emery’s Villains down to two points with a win.

Jacob Ramsey is a doubt for Villa after he missed their goalless draw at Ajax in the Europa League with a foot injury.

Tyrone Mings, Boubacar Kamara (both knee), Jhon Duran (hamstring) and Emiliano Buendia (ACL) remain on the sidelines.

Tottenham could welcome Pedro Porro back into contention following his recovery from a muscle injury.

Fraser Forster (foot), Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring), Manor Solomon and Richarlison (both knee) remain ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Villa host Tottenham at Villa Park on Sunday 10 March at 1pm GMT, live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Aston Villa have won four of their last six league meetings against Tottenham (W4, L2).
  • Tottenham are unbeaten in 11 of their last 12 league visits to Villa Park (W9, D2, L1).
  • Villa are looking to win consecutive home games against Tottenham for the first time in 20 years, having won in May and November 2004 respectively that year.
  • Ollie Watkins has been involved in 26 league goals for Villa this season – having scored 16 goals and created 10 assists.
  • Three of Tottenham’s four away goals in 2024 so far have been scored by Richarlison (D2), but the Brazilian is ruled out through injury.

Prediction

Having rotated his squad for a scrappy goalless away draw at Ajax, Villa now should benefit from having fresh players for this difficult tie and that clean sheet will only give them extra confidence because they are playing really well when fully focused on the league.

Spurs meanwhile were lucky that their end product found its clinical edge in the closing stages to beat Palace last weekend, because they were otherwise wasteful and could of easily lost that game but they can’t afford to be sloppy here despite their impressive away form at Villa as this is a much tougher test of their top-four credentials.

I therefore do expect this to be close but Villa have been difficult to beat at home this season bar the odd occasion and can’t see them losing this if they’re at their best.

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham

Result: Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham
