2023-24 UEFA Champions League Round of 16: Second Leg – Bayern Munich vs Lazio

Bayern Munich host Lazio at Allianz Arena in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie in 2023-24 UEFA Champions League.

Trailing 1-0 on aggregate, only victory would see Bayern advance to the Quarter-Finals although a 1-0 win would at least force extra time.

Lazio meanwhile know that a win or draw would be enough to see them through on aggregate.

Dayot Upamcano is suspended for Bayern Munich after his red card in their first leg defeat last month.

Leroy Sane (tendon) is expected to be available for selection following his return to training after he missed Bayern’s 2-2 draw at Freiburg in the Bundesliga.

Daniel Peretz, Kingsley Coman (both knee), Bouna Sarr, Gabriel Marusic (both ACL), Sacha Boey, Noussair Mazraoui, Tarek Buchmann (all hamstring), Serge Gnabry (tendon) and Noel Aseko-Nkili (ankle) remain absent.

Lazio have no fresh injury concerns to report after their Serie A loss to AC Milan.

Nicolo Rovella (groin) and Patric (ankle) are ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Bayern face Lazio at Allianz Arena on Tuesday 5 March at 9pm CET (8pm UK Time), live on TNT Sports 1 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Bayern have won two of their three previous Champions League meetings against Lazio (W2, L1).
  • Lazio lost 2-1 in their only previous Champions League visit to Bayern Munich in March 2021 (L1).
  • Lazio’s first leg win marked their first clean sheet against Bayern in the Champions League.
  • Harry Kane has scored three goals in two of Bayern’s three matches at home in this season’s Champions League (W2, D1).
  • Two of Lazio’s three away goals in this season’s Champions League were scored by Pedro.

Prediction

After a sluggish first leg in Rome where they were superbly kept out of goal by a resilient Lazio defence amidst final touches with zero shots on target, Bayern really need to score first here otherwise they are in deep trouble which is a huge surprise.

Two clean sheets in ten matches in 2024 also is atrocious by Bayern’s high standards but they clearly have the attacking quality to turn this tie around, so it is critical that they enjoy a strong start otherwise the home fans could be singing Bye Bye Bye to their last trophy hope of the season.

Lazio meanwhile have won just one of their last four games following that first leg success but with a narrow aggregate lead, they can’t afford to go too defensive given Bayern’s attacking prowess and home advantage so counter-attacking tactics could be important for the Italians.

Bayern though certainly are back in their attacking groove but if Lazio play like they did in the first leg, they really could nick this on aggregate.

Prediction: Bayern Munich 1-1 Lazio

Result: Bayern Munich 3-0 Lazio (Bayern Munich win 3-1 on aggregate)
