Midfielder, Conor Coventry has departed West Ham for Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Coventry graduated through the Hammers’ academy and went on to make ten senior appearances since his debut in a Carabao Cup win over Macclesfield in September 2018, during which he featured five times in West Ham’s run to last season’s UEFA Europa Conference League title.
Across his time in East London, Coventry enjoyed loan stints at Lincoln City, Peterborough, MK Dons and Rotherham respectively, where he scored one goal in 57 appearances away on loan from the Hammers – which came in a 2-1 home win over Crewe Alexandra for MK Dons in April 2022.
The 23 year-old’s contract however was set to expire this summer which led West Ham to accept an offer from Charlton, which has seen Coventry reunite with manager – Michael Appleton who previously had Coventry on loan at Lincoln.
Confirming Coventry’s move to the Valley on a three-and-a-half year contract, West Ham issued the following statement: “Everyone at West Ham United would like to thank Conor for his efforts during his time at the Club, and wish him well for his future career.”
Coventry meanwhile told www.charltonafc.com that he is happy to be part of Charlton’s long-term project, knowing from experience as a Londoner what each club means to local fans.
“The vision of the gaffer and the people behind the scenes with where they want to take the club. I’m from London so I know what this club means to people and the size of it. I’m really looking forward to buying into what is going on here and being a part of it.”
Appleton added: “I’m delighted we’ve been able to sign Conor. He’s someone that quite a few years ago I took on his very first loan at Lincoln. To be able to be reunited with him on a permanent deal I’m delighted with.
“He’s very, very comfortable on the ball and knows his position really well. He’s a good passer of the ball, with good technique, and he’s got a steeliness to him as well which I like – a bit of nastiness to him. He’s one who lives his life right and is a proper professional.”
Coventry could make his debut for Charlton at home to Peterborough at The Valley tomorrow (13 January) in a 3pm GMT kick-off.
