2023-24 UEFA Europa League: Group Stage – Matchweek Five Roundup

Roundup of the penultimate matchweek in the group stages of 2023-24 UEFA Europa League. 

Liverpool and West Ham looked to wrap up qualification as group winners, whilst Brighton and Rangers sought to secure qualification with a game to spare.

Now, here is a roundup of all the action in the penultimate round of group stage action in 2023-24 UEFA Europa League.

 

Group A

Tomas Soucek turned in Maxwel Cornet’s 90th minute cross to snatch a 1-0 west for West Ham away to TSC, which sealed qualification for the knockout stages.

SC Freiburg also guaranteed their knockout spot after they saw off Olympiacos in a 5-0 hom win, during which Michael Gregoritsch scored a hat-trick whilst Kiliann Sildillia and Ritsu Doan also found the net.

 

Group B

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s hat-trick – including a 93rd minute penalty winner – saw Marseille scrape past ten-man Ajax 4-3, as Steven Berghuis was sent off in the 63rd minute after having provided first-half assists for Brian Brobbey’s brace.

Joao Pedro’s 55th minute penalty saw Brighton seal qualification with a 1-0 win at AEK Athens, in a close game which saw the hosts reduced to ten men after Mijat Gacinovic was red carded.

 

Group C

Lukas Haraslin’s 54th minute winner saw Sparta Prague beat Real Betis to keep their qualifying dreams alive.

Rangers remain second after Ross McClausland rescured them a 1-1 draw at home to Aris Limassol, after Shavy Babicka had put the Cypriot team ahead at half time.

 

Group D

Gianluca Scamacc’s opening goal was cancelled out by Marcus Edwards as Group D leaders, Atalanta and Sporting Lisbon played out a 1-1 draw.

John Yeboah’s 81st minute winner saw Rakow Czestochowa scrape past Strum Graz to end the Austrian’s team’s dreams of reaching the knockout stages.

 

Group E

Cody Gakpo’s brace plus goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah saw Liverpool comfortably dispatch LASK 4-0 at Anfield, which sealed qualification for the knockout stages.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds also secured top spot and a bye to the Rounde of 16 after Toulouse held Union Saint-Gilloise to a goalless draw.

 

Group F

Martin Terrier, Amine Gouiri and Fabian Rieder all netted for Group F leaders, Rennes in a 3-0 away win at Maccabi Haifa.

Villarreal sit second following a 3-2 win over Panathinaikos and goalless draw against Maccabi Haifa in a rearranged clash, with Alejandro Baena, Santi Comesana and Jose Luis Morales having netted in the former game.

 

Group G

Muhamed Tijani netted a 95th minute winner for Group G leaders, Slavia Prague in a 3-2 win away to Sheriff Tiraspol, having led initially before the Moldovan team fought back to lead only for Christos Zafeiris to pull the Czech visitors level.

AS Roma sit second after Romelu Lukaku’s 21st minute goal was cancelled out by Chris Bedia’s equalliser in a 1-1 draw away to Servette.

 

Group H

Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick both netted for Group H winners, Bayer Leverkusen in a 2-0 away win at BK Hacken.

Qarabag remain second ahead of Molde on head-to-head points after Bohul Mustafazada’s 95th minute equaliser rescued the Azerbaijani club a 2-2 away draw at Aker Stadion, after having initially led through Olavio Juninho before Kristian Eriksen struck twice for the Norwegian hosts.
