2023-24 Premier League: Week Seven – Newcastle vs Burnley

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United face a winless Burnley in a Premier League clash at St James’ Park.

Victory would see Newcastle go sixth if Aston Villa and West Ham lose elsewhere, whilst Burnley can climb out of the relegation zone with a win if results elsewhere swing in their favour.

Callum Wilson is a doubt for Newcastle after he missed their Carabao Cup win over Manchester City with a tight hamstring.

Sven Botman (knee), Bruno Guimaraes (ankle), Alexander Isak (fatigue), Martin Dubravka and Dan Burn (both illness) are doubts and face late fitness tests.

Harvey Barnes (foot), Emil Krafth (knee) and Joe Willock (hamstring/Achilles) remain absent.

Burnley will be without midfielder, Manuel Benson after he suffered an ankle injury during their Carabao Cup win at Salford City in midweek.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (muscle) is a doubt but Nathan Redmond (unspecified), Lyle Foster (suspension), Hjalmar Ekdal (knee), Michael Obafemi (hamstring) and Darko Churlinov (unspecified) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Newcastle host Burnley at St James’ Park in a 3pm BST kick-off on Saturday 30 September, untelevised in the UK.

Prediction

After their recent rut, Newcastle seem to have found their form again with clinically ruthless demolitions of Sheffield United and Man City, which has come at an ideal time for the Magpies who know that another win here would set them up nicely for their midweek clash against PSG.

Burnley however can’t be underestimated because they are beginning to click into gear and after unluckily losing at home to Manchester United last weekend, Vincent Kompany’s Clarets were absolutely excellent in their Carabao Cup mauling of Salford.

Kompany though needs his players to bring that quality to Tyneside because if they play with the same organisation and discipline despite rotating players again, I can see them causing some issues but Newcastle might just have enough for the win if they play at their best again.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Burnley

Result: Newcastle 2-0 Burnley
