2021-22 Premier League: Week 38 – Burnley vs Newcastle

Relegation-battling Burnley face a tricky final-day clash of 2021-22 Premier League season against Newcastle United at Turf Moor.

Victory would see Burnley avoid relegation no matter what Leeds achieve at Brentford, although a draw or defeat would require the Clarets needing Leeds not bettering their result in order to stay up.

Newcastle meanwhile can finish as high as 10th with a win if Brighton and Brentford both lose elsewhere.

Matt Lowton is suspended for Burnley after he was red carded in Thursday’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

Jay Rodriguez (hamstring) and Ben Mee (knee) could be available for selection but Erik Pieters, Matej Vydra (both knee) Ashley Westwood (ankle) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (calf) remain absent.

Newcastle could welcome Chris Wood back into contention after he missed Monday’s win over Arsenal with a hip injury.

Fabian Schar (concussion) and Ryan Fraser (hamstring) are doubts.

Jonjo Shelvey (calf), Isaac Hayden, Joe Willock (both knee), Jamal Lewis (groin) and Javier Manquillo (illness) are ruled out.

Stat Attack

  • Burnley have claimed four points from their last seven league meetings against Newcastle (W1, D1, L5).
  • Newcastle have won just two of their last five visits to Burnley (W2, D1, L2).
  • Burnley are yet to be awarded a penalty kick following 11 previous Premier League meetings against Newcastle, in which the Magpies scored one of their two spot-kicks.
  • Out of all teams above the relegation zone coming into this matchweek, no team has delivered fewer league goals this season than Burnley with 33 goals in 37 matches.
  • Joelinton has made more tackles in the Premier League this season than any other Newcastle player, having committed 72 tackles in 34 appearances.

Prediction

With survival in their own hands, Burnley just need to go out and play their best possible football but they will need to be more clinical than they were at Villa on Thursday, although their grit and spirit could well be enough if Leeds fail to better their result.

Newcastle’s away form in the last two months meanwhile has been poor with one win on the road which will suit Burnley, yet they’re coming into this match off the back of a dominant home win over Arsenal so the pressure is off them which could play into their hands if Burnley need to chase a win.

It however is only five months ago that this fixture screamed final day relegation decider, so it’s to Newcastle’s credit that they’re safe and all pressure is now on Burnley which could mean a tense affair depending on how Leeds fare elsewhere.

I though am going to go for a home win because Burnley will be super motivated for this match whereas Newcastle have little to play for, whilst the Magpies’ poor away form is another reason to go against them if I was a betting man.

Prediction: Burnley 2-1 Newcastle

Result: Burnley 1-2 Newcastle
