Crystal Palace have signed goalkeeper, Dean Henderson from Manchester United for £20m.
Henderson’s move has brought his 12-year spell at Man Utd to a close, having graduated through the academy and made 29 senior appearances since he joined from Carlisle United aged 14 years-old.
Henderson however had struggled to displace David De Gea as Utd’s first-choice goalkeeper in recent seasons, which saw him loaned out to Nottingham Forest last season where he made 20 appearances before a thigh injury in January sidelined him for the rest of last season.
Utd since decided that Henderson was no longer part of their long-term vision following De Gea’s exit, which has also seen Nathan Bishop sold to Sunderland whilst Matej Kovar and Ondrej Mastny have also left in a goalkeeping revamp.
Palace have paid an initial £15m fee with a further £5m in add-ons taking the total fee up to £20m, whilst Utd have inserted a sell-on clause into the initial contract which will allow the Red Devils to earn a small percentage if Palace sell Henderson to another club in the future.
Speaking about his decision to join Palace on a five-year contract until June 2028 after having initially been linked with a permanent return to Forest, Henderson said: “I’m absolutely delighted and buzzing to be here. I can’t wait to get started.
“This club has got great fans and has a lot of top players who are hungry to succeed. There’s something being built here, and I really want to be a part of it.”
Palace Chairman, Steve Parish added that Henderson “is a fantastic addition” to the club’s goalkeeping selection.
Henderson could make his debut for Palace at home to Wolves at Selhurst Park on Sunday 2 September in a 2pm BST kick-off live on Sky Sports.
