Bournemouth have signed 19 year-old midfielder, Alex Scott from Bristol City for £25m.
Scott has impressed for Bristol City in the last two seasons after making his debut for the club at the age of 17 in April 2021, as his performances ultimately saw him crowned the Championship’s Young Player of the Season at the 2022-23 EFL Awards, and also named in the 2022-23 Championship Team of the Season.
Several Premier League clubs subsequently began to initiate serious interest in the midfielder, with Bristol City knocking back transfer offers from Wolves and Bournemouth whilst Tottenham and West Ham were reportedly interested in making a move for the England Under-20s international.
Bournemouth eventually managed to sign Scott on a five-year contract until June 2028, after agreeing an initial £20m fee plus £5m in add-ons for the midfielder, who is currently out injured with a knee injury.
Bournemouth Chief Executive, Neill Blake is “delighted” to welcome Scott back to the club, after the midfielder spent time training with the Cherries as a teenager after he was released by Southampton.
Explaining the decision behind their move for Scott, Blake commented: “He’s a player that has vast experience at such a young age with strong technical ability and a really good footballing brain.
“Alex will be an excellent fit in our system, and we’re excited to see him continue to develop under Andoni’s management.”
Bristol City owner, Steve Lansdown described Scott as “a top-class footballer” who the club “have been privileged to watch him play over the past few years and wear the Bristol City shirt.”
Lansdown also admitted that the Robins are “sorry” to see Scott leave but iterated that “this is an opportunity for him to follow his football dream in the Premier League. He goes with our blessing and will always have a special place in the hearts of Bristol City fans.”
Scott first joined Bristol City from Guernsey FC in January 2020 and proceeded to make his debut in the Robins’ final three games of 2020-21 season, of which all three matches ended in defeat against Luton, Millwall and Brentford respectively.
The now 19 year-old went on to score six goals in 88 appearances across the last two seasons in which he became a first-team regular, meaning that he has left Ashton Gate with six goals in 91 senior appearances in total.
During his time at Ashton Gate, Scott helped England to win 2022 UEFA Under-19s Euros in which he scored in a semi-final comeback against Italy, before he started in a 3-1 triumph over Israel in the Final which led him to graduate into the Under-20s squad and was part of the team which controversially lost to Italy in the Round of 16.
