Fulham have signed defender, Calvin Bassey from Ajax in a £18.2m transfer deal.

Marco Silva’s Cottagers reportedly were considering both Bassey and Southampton’s Mohamed Salisu, but eventually opted for the 23 year-old after agreeing to pay a £18.2m transfer fee to Ajax.

Bassey has signed a four-year contract until June 2027 with an option for a further 12 months and leaves Ajax after just one season in which he scored one goal in 39 appearances, as the Eredivie club finished as runner-up in KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield.

Speaking to FFCtv about his move to the club, Bassey commented: “I know how big of a club Fulham is. They always have quality players, they’re playing in the Premier League, the best league in the world, so I didn’t have to think much about it.

“It’s a London club as well, so it’s always a plus to go home! I’m happy it’s all done now and I can just focus on the football and help the team build on last season, when they did amazing.”

Vice-Chairman and Director of Football Operations, Tony Khan added: “I’m thrilled to welcome Calvin Bassey to Fulham Football Club!

“He’s a young and versatile defender; a homegrown player who developed at Leicester City’s academy before moving on to play for Rangers and then for Ajax, as well as Nigeria’s national team.

“Calvin’s been a top target for us, so we’re all delighted that he’s committed for the long term with Fulham, and we’re looking forward to watching him progress.”

Bassey could make his competitive debut for Fulham away to Everton at 3pm BST on Saturday 11 August, before possibly making his home bow in a London derby against Brentford a week later at 3pm on 19 August.
