Liverpool have signed midfielder, Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig for an undisclosed fee.

Szoboszlai is Liverpool’s second signing of this summer’s transfer window following Alexis Mac Allister’s move from Brighton last month, with the Hungarian signing a five-year contract until June 2028 and Liverpool reportedly paying a £60.2m transfer fee to RB Leipzig.

The 22 year-old has scored ten goals in each of the last two seasons for RB Leipzig in which he made 91 appearances in total across both campaigns, as the German club won DFB-Pokal in successive seasons and recorded top-four finishes in Bundesliga.

Szoboszlai’s final goal for RB Leipzig came on his final appearance for the German club last month, as he scored a 85th minute winner in the DFB-Pokal Final in a 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, with their opening goal having been scored by Chelsea signing – Christopher Nkunku.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com about his move to Anfield, Szoboszlai commented: “It’s really, really good. I enjoyed the last [few] days and I’m looking forward to knowing everybody better.

“The last three or four days went really long; it was not that easy. But at the end I’m here, I’m happy and I can’t wait to get started.”

Szoboszlai added that he can’t wait to join a “historic club,” in Liverpool with “really good players”, and a “good coach” in Jurgen Klopp.

The Hungarian also iterated that Liverpool is the right club for him to progress as he added: “For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.”

Klopp added that he is “excited” to coach Szoboszlai who he previously faced as an oppositional manager, when the midfielder was part of the Red Bull Salzburg team which met Liverpool in 2019-20 UEFA Champions League’s Group Stage.

The German proceeded to admit that during those two meetings, he realised Szoboszlai “was a really interesting prospect.”

Klopp however iterated that patience will be a virtue with Szoboszlai as he added: “There is no pressure, though. Dominik is still a very young player.

“He has so much development ahead of him and this means it makes sense for us all to be patient and to give him the time and space to allow his talent to come through within our team.”

Szoboszlai represents Hungary in international football where he has scored seven goals in 32 appearances since he made his debut in March 2019, having previously received his first senior call-up in June 2017 but failed to make an appearance on that occasion.
