Republic of Ireland Announce Squad For 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

Republic of Ireland have announced a 23-player squad for 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. 

Manager, Vera Paw has selected 14 players from across the top two tiers of women’s football in England, including an all Women’s Super League selection in goal, fronted by Everton’s Courtney Brosnan with Grace Moloney and Megan Walsh of Reading and Brighton respectively also selected.

Liverpool’s Niamh Fahey is the big name in Paw’s defence alongside; Louise Quinn, Diane Caldwell, Megan Connolly, Chloe Musraki and Izzy Atkinson of Birmingham City, Reading, Brighton, Bristol City and West Ham respectively.

Florida State Seminoles’ Heather Payne, Shamrock Rovers’ Aine O’Gorman and Celtic’s Claire O’Riordan are also named in defence.

Arsenal’s Katie McCabe headlines the midfield selection alongside Ruesha Littlejohn, Lily Agg and Lucy Quin of Aston Villa, London City Lionesses and Birmingham City respectively, with Hearts’ Ciara Grant also included in the squad.

McCabe will also serve as the team captain throughout the tournament, following an impressive campaign in which she scored four goals for club and country, including a 74th minute comeback winner against Manchester City in their WSL clash in April.

Denise O’Sullivan and Sinead Farrelly who respectively play for North Carolina Courage and NJ/NY Gotham FC in America’s NWSL have also been named in Paw’s midfield line-up.

London City Lionesses’ Kyra Carusa heads up Ireland’s attack alongside Standard Liege’s Amber Barrett, Shamrock’s Abbie Larkin and Washington Spirit’s Marissa Sheva.

Paw has also named Birmingham City’s Harriet Scott and Jamie Finn plus Lewes’ Sophie Whitehouse as training players, in case of injury before FIFA’s official squad list deadline of 10 July.

Republic of Ireland kick off their first-ever Women’s World Cup on Thursday 20 July as they meet tournament co-hosts, Australia at Stadium Australia, Sydney, in a 11am (UK Time) kick off live on ITV1 in the UK.

Ireland then meet Canada on Wednesday 26 July in Perth at 1pm UK Time on ITV1 in the UK, before facing Nigeria in their final Group B match on Monday 31 July at 11am UK Time live on BBC1 in the UK.
