UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifying: Republic of Ireland vs Gibraltar

Republic of Ireland host Gibraltar at Aviva Stadium, Dublin, in Qualifying Group B of UEFA Euro 2024.

Both teams enter this match sat bottom of their group with Ireland ahead on goal difference, meaning that Ireland will stay fourth with a draw but can go third with a win.

Gibraltar meanwhile must simply take victory if want to move off the foot of the table.

Matt Doherty is suspended for Republic of Ireland after he was red carded in their away defeat to Greece last Friday (16 June).

Uncapped Liam Scales and Jack Taylor could make their senior debuts after the pair were left out of the matchday squad in Greece.

Gibraltar meanwhile have no fresh injury concerns to report following their 3-0 loss to France, with a full squad available for selection.

When is Kick-Off?

Republic of Ireland host Gibraltar at Aviva Stadium, Dublin, in a 7:45pm BST kick-off on Monday 19 June, live on ViaplayXtra in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Republic of Ireland have won all four previous meetings against Gibraltar in European Qualifiers (W4).
  • Gibraltar have lost each of their two previous visits to Ireland (L2), in which they conceded nine goals without scoring.
  • Ireland are yet to concede against Gibraltar in all competitions, during which they have scored 14 goals in four previous meetings.
  • Ireland have scored in six of their last eight home matches in all competitions (W4, D1, L3), only failing to find the net against Ukraine in June 2022 then France in March 2023.
  • Gibraltar have lost all three qualifiers in this campaign by 3-0 results.

Prediction

Having endured two narrow defeats to leave their Euro 2024 qualification dreams hanging by a thread after just two matches, this game is now seriously make-or-break for Ireland’s dreams because they didn’t look particularly solid against Greece and were just outplayed comfortably.

Something though has to be done about laser pens in players’ eyes because the Greek fans’ behaviour didn’t exactly help Ireland with constant targeting, even if that isn’t an excuse for the lacklustre away performance.

Gibraltar meanwhile just seem to lack any quality to mount a challenge for victory coming into this game and unless their defence improves, I can’t help but feel that this is Ireland’s chance to return to winning ways.

Prediction: ROI 2-0 Gibraltar

Result: ROI 3-0 Gibraltar
