Manchester City have announced a 2023-24 pre-season international friendly against Atletico Madrid in Seoul, South Korea on Sunday 30 July 2023.
This clash will see Man City travel to Asia for the first time since July 2019 when they visited China, during which they lost the Premier League Asia Trophy Final on penalties to Wolves after beating West Ham 4-1 in their semi-final.
City will play Atletico Madrid at World Cup Stadium, Seoul, as part of the Coupang Play Series, set up by Korean streaming service – Coupang Play in conjunction with British sports marketing agency, Pitch International.
City Football Group’s Chief Commercial Officer, Esteve Calzada issued the following statement following confirmation of the friendly, as he said: “We are excited to announce this preseason fixture in Seoul, South Korea as part of our Asia tour this summer, as we return to the region for the first time since 2019.”
This friendly will mark the first time that Man City play in South Korea since 1976 but Calzada iterated that the club “has a strong relationship” with South Korea through a mixture “of strategic and long-term partners from the country and a passionate, ever growing fanbase.”
City however visited Seoul during the mid-season break due to 2022 FIFA World Cup with club ambassador, Shaun Wright-Phillips taking their Premier League trophy on a Global Trophy Tour.
Head of Coupang Play, Stephen Kim added: “We very much look forward to welcoming Manchester City to Korea for the Coupang Play Series,” as he applauded their “exceptional squad” who will hopefully deliver “an unforgettable match to our Coupang Wow customers and Korea’s football fans.”
City will announce further details of their pre-season tour and ticketing information in due course, alongside broadcast and specific ticket details for their friendly against Atletico Madrid.
