League One’s Exeter City have signed midfielder, Joe White on loan from Newcastle United until end of 2022-23 season.
White’s move to Exter comes after he produced three goals and one assist in seven appearances this season for Newcastle United’s Under-21s team, with all seven appearances coming in the Second Division of Premier League 2, where the Magpies currently lie sixth in the league table.
This loan deal also marks the second consecutive season where White has spent the second half of the campaign on loan at an EFL club, having failed to score but created three assists in 16 appearances for Hartlepool who were in League Two last season.
Speaking about his loan move to Exeter, White commented: “I can’t wait, obviously first team football at a really good level, in a really good team, so yeah I can’t wait to get started training and get on the pitch.”
On what he can add to a team challenging for the League One Play-Offs, the 20 year-old added: “I am a creative midfielder, like to take people on with the ball, play in tight spaces, work and combine with others and I like to make the final action whether that’s assists or goals.”
Exeter City manager, Gary Caldwell previously coached White during his time in charge of Newcastle’s U21s squad on an interim basis.
Explaining why he has now opted to sign White on loan, Caldwell said: “Joe is someone I got to know when I was at Newcastle United U23s for a short period of time.
“Straight away I noticed he was a player of real quality, he stood out and he has wonderful dribbling skills and a wonderful left foot.
“Since then he has been on loan at Hartlepool United and has gained important first team experience and he’s now at an age and time in his career where he is really ready to impact a first team and he will be great competition for the midfield and attacking midfielders in the squad.”
White is ineligible to make his debut against Barnsley tomorrow (7 January) after failing to join ahead of the player registration deadline, meaning that he must wait until 14 January to make his bow for Exeter at home against Forest Green Rovers.
