2022-23 Premier League: Week 18 Roundup

Arsenal continue to sit atop of Premier League following the first full matchweek of 2023.

League leaders, Arsenal remain top of the table after battling to a gutsy goalless draw at home to third-placed Newcastle United.

Riyad Mahrez’s 63rd minute winner from Jack Grealish’s pass saw second-placed Manchester City defeat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which in-turn trimmed their deficit to Arsenal down to five points.

Goals from Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford saw Manchester United thrash Bournemouth 3-0 at Old Trafford, which ensured the Red Devils stay fourth on virtue of inferior goal difference to third-placed Newcastle.

Harry Kane’s brace plus goals from Matt Doherty and Son Heung-min saw Tottenham thrash Crystal Palace 4-0 at Selhurst Park, which mean that Spurs round out the top five.

Down in the relegation zone, Southampton remain rock-bottom following a 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, who consequently moved out of the relegation zone with Taiwo Awoniyi’s 27th minute winner.

Wolves again sit second-bottom after Daniel Podence’s opening goal was cancelled out by Danny Ings in a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

Evan Ferguson provided a goal and assist as Brighton thrashed Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park, which saw the Toffees slip into the bottom three in 18th position.

Elsewhere, Ibrahima Konate’s own-goal plus goals from Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo saw Brentford stun Liverpool to clinch a 3-1 home win, after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had briefly reduced the Reds’ deficit to 2-1 in the 50th minute.

Rodrigo’s 70th minute equaliser saw Leeds snatch a 2-2 draw at home to West Ham who had fought back through goals from Lucas Paqueta and Gianluca Scamacca, after Wilfried Gnonto had put the hosts in front.

Finally, Aleksandar Mitrovic’s 17th minute strike saw Fulham snatch a narrow victory at Leicester.
