Chelsea have signed Swedish midfielder, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd from BK Hacken on a free transfer.

Rytting Kaneryd’s arrival at Chelsea comes just over a week since her international adventures with Sweden at this summer’s UEFA Women’s Euro ended at the semi-final stage, during which she made two starts and three substitute appearances.

Rytting Kaneryd consequently heads to Chelsea with 22 international caps and one goal for her country.

The 25 year-old Swedish midfielder was also a free agent after her contract at Sweden’s BK Hacken expired on 1 July, with Chelsea having beaten a host of top European clubs to secure Rytting Kaneryd’s services on a three-year contract until June 2025 with option for an one-season extension.

Speaking about the decision to sign Rytting Kaneryd, Chelsea Women manager – Emma Hayes commented: “We’ve been watching Johanna develop over the last 12-18 months and she has had an unbelievable season last year in Sweden.

“She’s extremely quick, direct, a great age and she’s the profile player we’ve been looking for. Johanna will bring another dynamic to the team and we are really looking forward to her career with us at Chelsea.”

Rytting Kaneryd began her career at the age of 17 playing for Tyresö FF which was followed by a spell at Djurgardens IF, where she scored six goals in 45 appearances across two seasons.

Rytting Kaneryd then spent three seasons at FC Rosengard with whom she helped win 2019 Damallsvenskan title, prior to joining BK Hacken last year where she went on to net 15 goals in 55 appearances.

The 25 year-old midfielder however is ready for a fresh challenge outside of Swedish football as she looked ahead to the new season with Chelsea, in which she said: “I’m delighted to join this amazing club! I can’t wait to meet my new team-mates and staff and start working on our goals for the season!”

Rytting Kaneryd will wear the number 19 shirt and could make her Blues debut against Lyon in this month’s International Women’s Champions Cup in Portland, Oregon, USA on 17 August.
