2022-23 Premier League: Week One – Tottenham vs Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton look to begin the new season on a high as they meet at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Antonio Conte’s Spurs are looking to build upon their fourth-placed finish of last season, whereas Southampton will be hoping for a better campaign after their struggles last season.

Tottenham could be without summer signing – Yves Bissouma as the midfielder battles to recover from a hamstring injury in time.

Japhet Tanganga (illness) is a doubt but Oliver Skipp (heel) and summer signing – Richarlison (suspension) are ruled out.

Manager, Antonio Conte could hand Ivan Perisic, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence their first competitive debuts for Spurs following their arrivals this summer, but Fraser Forster is set to start on the bench as second-choice goalkeeper to Hugo Lloris.

Southampton will be without Theo Walcott after he failed to participate in pre-season with an unspecified injury.

Valentino Livramento and Nathan Tella are ruled out with knee injuries, whilst Romain Perraud (foot) is a doubt.

Summer signings, Armel Bella-Kotchap, Romeo Lavia, Joe Aribo and Sekou Mara are set for their first competitive Saints appearance.

Manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl however faces a selection dilemma as Gavin Bazunu and Mateusz Lis push for their Southampton debut in goal.

Stat Attack

  • Tottenham are unbeaten in three of their last five Premier League meetings against Southampton (W2, D1, L2).
  • Southampton have won just one of their last five league visits to Tottenham (W1, L5).
  • Son Heung-Min has scored in each of his last two Spurs’ appearances at home against Southampton (W1, L1).
  • Tottenham’s Harry Kane scored five goals during pre-season including braces against South Korea’s Team K League and Scotland’s Rangers.
  • Southampton have claimed just two points from their last five opening weekend fixtures in a new season (D2, L3), with all three defeats coming away from home in last three seasons.

Having enjoyed a positive finish to last season, Tottenham have certainly spent this summer reinvigorating their squad, following the arrivals of Bissouma, Perisic and Spence amongst others which offers hope that Spurs can show more attacking flair consistency than we saw last season.

Southampton meanwhile seem to be building for the future based on their transfer business this summer, with only Joe Aribo looking likely to make an immediate impact which is a worry especially off the back of a sluggish pre-season.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints have also won just one of their last 13 competitive matches in all competitions, which doesn’t fill me with much further confidence on their prospects coming into this game other than their midfield looks their best bet for goals.

In fact, I am struggling to see past a comfortable home win if Tottenham can bring their pre-season attacking form into this game, as I just can’t see Southampton’s defence handling an in-form Harry Kane on this opening weekend of the season.

Prediction: Tottenham 3-0 Southampton

Result: Tottenham 4-1 Southampton
