Manchester United have signed defender Maya Le Tissier from Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee.
Le Tissier began her career with her hometown club, St. Martins A.C. on the island of Guernsey before she was signed by Brighton in 2018, where she graduated through their youth pathway into the senior first-team squad during which she scored two goals in 73 appearances.
Brighton Women’s Head Coach, Hope Powell issued the following tribute to the 20 year-old as she spoke of her sadness to see Le Tissier depart as she said: “Maya is one of the best young players in the WSL and we’re really sorry to see her go. It has been a privilege to play an integral role in her development.
“Her ability is matched by her hard work and commitment and she has always been a great role model for the younger players in our squad.
“We thank Maya for her contributions during the last few years and wish her the best at Manchester United.”
Le Tissier has signed a three-year contract with Utd and described the move as “very special” as she joins a team looking to fight for a top-three finish in the Women’s Super League.
Explaining her reasons behind departing Brighton for Utd, Le Tissier commented: “The ambition and values of the club suit me as a person and it’s a very exciting project here that I want to be a part of.
“Today is a very proud moment for me and I can’t wait to pull on the famous red shirt.”
Utd Women’s manager, Marc Skinner added that Le Tissier’s arrival serves as “… a continued sign of this football club’s ambition.”
Skinner proceeded to explain that the 20 year-old defender and England Under-23 international has been on their radar for a while as he added: “Maya is a player that we have been monitoring for a while, and as expected she is developing into one of the brightest young players in the country.
“We now look forward to starting pre-season and embedding Maya into our team.”
Le Tissier will make her Utd debut away to Tottenham on the opening weekend of 2022-23 Women’s Super League season.
