Chelsea have signed midfielder Raheem Sterling from Premier League rivals, Manchester City in a £47.5m transfer deal.

Sterling began his career at Alpha & Omega, a local youth team in London before joining QPR’s youth academy which led to him being scouted and signing for Liverpool in February 2010.

Just over two years later, Sterling eventually made his senior debut for Liverpool in a 2-1 home defeat to Wigan as he eventually went on to score 23 goals in 129 appearances for the Reds across four seasons which led to Man City signing him in July 2015.

Across his seven seasons at City, Sterling has played a key role in the club’s attack with 131 goals and 74 assists in 339 appearances en route to four Premier League and EFL Cup titles plus one FA Cup and Community Shield honour apiece.

Speaking about his decision to leave Man City, Sterling posted a message on Twitter in which he spoke of his journey as a player at City:

Sterling has signed a five-year contract with Chelsea until June 2027 with an option for one further season in West London, and has already flown out to join his new teammates for the Blues’ pre-season in America.

“I’ve obviously achieved a lot in my career so far, but there is still so much more to achieve and I’m really looking forward to doing that in a Chelsea shirt, under Thomas’ management,” commented Sterling on his ambitions at Chelsea.

Having been raised in London during his childhood, Sterling is happy to return to the city where he grew up as he added: “London is my home and where it all started for me, and it’s amazing I now have the opportunity to play in front of friends and family week in, week out at Stamford Bridge.

Sterling also represents England in international football where he has scored 19 goals in 77 appearances since 2012, and was part of the squads which finished third in 2018-19 UEFA Nations League and runner-up in UEFA Euro 2020 respectively.

Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel could hand Sterling his first competitive Blues debut away at Everton in their Premier League opener on Saturday 6 August, with kick-off confirmed for 5:30pm BST live on Sky Sports.
