Spain midfielder, Rodri has signed a new three-year contract extension to stay at Manchester City until June 2027.

Rodri began his career at Villarreal after he was released from Atletico Madrid’s Youth Academy in 2013 only to return to the Colchoneros five years later, where he scored three goals in 47 appearances before Man City met his release clause a year later in July 2019.

Since he arrived at City, Rodri has gone on to score 13 goals in 151 appearances during which he helped Pep Guardiola’s Citizens to two Premier League and EFL Cup titles apiece, as well as 2019 FA Community Shield.

Speaking about his decision to put pen to paper on a three-year extension to his current five-year contract which was set to expire in June 2024, Rodri said: “I have loved every second. The fans have been amazing with me, I feel totally supported by the Club and the manager pushes me every single day.”

Rodri also praised Guardiola for his impact and helping him to improve his development as a player as he added: “I have improved so much as a player, and I want to thank Pep and all the backroom staff for their help.

“They are completely committed to helping me become the best player I can be, and I appreciate their hard work.”

Rodri added that City “have been very successful” since his arrival which fills him with pride but admitted that their title success has made him “even more hungry” as he explained: “Once you start winning big titles, you don’t want to stop.

“City, I feel, offers me the best chance of winning trophies and that’s why I am so pleased to be staying here for longer.”

City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain in turn applauded Rodri for delivering “exceptional” performances and is “delighted” to extend his contract for three further seasons beyond the conclusion of 2023-24 season.

Begiristain also proceeded to pay tribute to Rodri for how he has adapted to English Football as he continued: “He is the perfect example of what a top professional should be: he has a fantastic attitude, lives his life in the right way, takes care of his body and trains hard every single day.

“That is a manager’s dream, and I know Pep loves working with him.

“He has improved a lot since coming here and, for me, he is now one of the best in the world in his position.”
