Liverpool Sell Takumi Minamino To AS Monaco In £15.4m Transfer Deal

Liverpool have sold Takumi Minamino to Ligue 1’s AS Monaco for £15.4m on a permanent transfer.

Minamino departs Anfield after scoring 14 goals in 55 senior appearances in a two-and-a-half year stint on Merseyside, which also included a loan stint at fellow Premier League rival – Southampton in second half of 2020-21 season where he netted twice in 10 appearances.

During his time at Liverpool, Minamino helped the club to their maiden Premier League title in his first season, before eventually playing a strong role in a Carabao Cup and FA Cup double last season during which he netted seven goals across both competitions in total.

Liverpool issued the following statement thanking Minamino for his contributions to the club across the last 30 months, in which they said: “Everyone at LFC would like to thank Taki for his contributions and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”

Reds manager, Jurgen Klopp meanwhile paid his own tribute to the 27 year-old striker as he admitted that “It’s hard” to see Minamino leave but believes that “… it’s a great move for him and one he thoroughly deserves.”

Klopp went on to praise Minamino for his professionalism and addressed those who had doubts about Minamino as he continued: “An amazing professional; super, talented player. As a person, he is full of warmth and makes everyone feel positive. A manager’s dream, to be honest.

“I’m sure there will be those who think it didn’t quite work out. Those who think this are wrong. I don’t accept that.

“His contribution far outweighs the opportunities we were able to give, in terms of starting matches. He made us better each and every day he was with us – not just in the games he played in but every single session in training. Perfect attitude, winner’s mentality.”

Klopp also acknowledged the importance and impact of Minamino’s 14 goals – of which 10 of the Japanese’s goals came in cup competitions – as he added: “His performances and his goals are the reason we have had to redecorate the Champions Wall so often. His achievements here will stand the test of time.”

On what Monaco supporters can expect from Minamino as they prepare for the Third Qualifying Round of this season’s Champions League, Klopp said: “I know he will be a big success at Monaco. I’m sure we will look on with a mix of celebration and envy as he progresses and flourishes there.

“He leaves with our appreciation and best wishes. Thank you, Taki.”

Minamino has signed a four-year contract at Monaco until June 2026 and described the move as “a great joy” as he looks for regular playing time.
