Newcastle United have completed the permanent signing of Matt Targett from Aston Villa in a £15m deal.

Targett joined Newcastle in January on a loan deal from Villa on deadline day and since went on to impress in 16 appearances, as he helped the club finish 11th in the Premier League.

Newcastle have consequently decided to convert the loan move into a permanent transfer in a £15m deal – including the £2m loan fee from January, with Targett no longer part of Steven Gerrard’s plans at Villa Park for next season.

The Magpies have also confirmed that Targett has signed a four-year contract which will see him stay on Tyneside until June 2026.

Speaking about his permanent switch to St James’ Park, Targett said that he was “absolutely delighted” to sign permanently for the next four years, after spending two-and-a-half years at Villa prior to his loan move in January.

The 26 year-old added that he didn’t hesitate when offered the chance to stay in the North East as he explained: “For me, it was an easy decision to make the loan permanent after the welcome I had from my fellow players, the staff, the supporters and the owners so I’m really happy to be here.”

Newcastle’s Head Coach, Eddie Howe praised Targett for delivering “a fantastic impact” during his loan spell with “… a big contribution to some excellent team performances.”

Howe also singled out Targett for his professionalism and personality as he continued: “He is a great lad and a top professional who undoubtedly makes us stronger so I’m delighted he sees his future here.”

Targett departs Villa after scoring three goals in 89 appearances across all competitions and Villa released the following statement on his departure: “Matt is very popular with players and staff alike and he will always have many friends at Aston Villa.

“We would like to wish Matt all the very best in the next phase of his career.”
