Birmingham City Women have appointed former player, Jo Potter as Assistant Head Coach.
Potter previously enjoyed three separate spells at the Blues, which included title success in 2011-12 Women’s FA Cup before she finished her career with Reading between 2017-2020 which was followed by confirmation of her retirement in January 2021.
The 37 year-old has also spent the last four years coaching at Coventry United Ladies, with one of her notable coaching achievements seeing her help guide the Cov United Ladies escape relegation in the very final minute of the 2021-22 FA Women’s Championship season.
Reflecting on her decision to make the switch to the Second City but now in a coaching role, Potter said: “It is surreal. I knew it was the right place for me to come back to for my career. I’m really excited.
“I’ve always got Blues in my heart. I spent over a decade of my career here. It didn’t take much convincing for me to come back.”
Potter is the latest addition to the backroom coaching staff led by Darren Carter, who was appointed as permanent manager yesterday (30 May) after serving as interim manager since November 2021 as Birmingham City suffered relegation from the Women’s Super League.
Carter was delighted to welcome Potter back to the club as his Assistant Head Coach as he commented: “The fact that she has been at the Club and cares about it, is a big thing. She will have the respect of the players and she wants to drive my vision with me.
“It will go down very well with the players and supporters and I am looking forward to it.”
Potter’s arrival also means that Tony Elliott will now become the Lead Goalkeeping Coach with immediate effect, as part of a coaching staff set-up change which sees Daniel Matrazsek depart the club with Birmingham City wishing him well for his future endeavours.
