2021-22 Premier League: Week 37 – Tottenham vs Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur welcome Burnley to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a huge clash at opposite ends of the Premier League table.

With Arsenal not in action until Monday evening, victory would see Antonio Conte’s Spurs climb to fourth.

Burnley can improve to 16th with a win for at least a few hours as Everton don’t play until teatime on Sunday.

Cristian Romero is a doubt for Tottenham after he missed Thursday’s win against Arsenal in the North London derby, as he continued to recover from a hip injury suffered at Liverpool last weekend.

Matt Doherty, Japhet Tanganga (both knee), Sergio Reguilon and Oliver Skipp (both groin) remain ruled out.

Burnley could have James Tarkowski available for selection after he recovered from a hamstring injury suffered in last weekend’s defeat against Aston Villa.

Jack Cork (knock) and Jay Rodriguez (hamstring) are doubtful but Ben Mee, Matej Vydra (both knee) Ashley Westwood (ankle) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (calf) remain absent.

Stat Attack

  • Tottenham are unbeaten in four of their last five league meetings against Burnley (W3, D1, L1).
  • Burnley have claimed just one point from their last five away visits to Spurs (D1, L4), drawing 1-1 in August 2017 when Tottenham temporarily played home games at Wembley Stadium.
  • This is the third meeting between Tottenham and Burnley this season in all competitions, with both teams having each claimed 1-0 wins which both came at Turf Moor.
  • Four of Tottenham’s 63 league goals this season have been scored on the counter-attack.
  • Ben Mee has headed in three goals for Burnley this season.

Having comfortably executed a clinical win over Arsenal on Thursday evening to move to within one point of the top four, Tottenham now really have the opportunity to put further pressure on Arsenal if they can win here but Spurs haven’t exactly been consistent in recent weeks which is a worry.

Burnley meanwhile are still fighting for survival with one game in hand on Leeds but just looked lacklustre last weekend in their loss to Villa, especially in terms of handling the Villains’ attacking tempo which certainly overwhelmed their defence despite doing a great job of turning clearances into attacks.

This clash therefore is quite significant at both ends of the table and both meetings this season so far have been quite scrappy, so another repeat display wouldn’t be surprised if Tottenham turn up and steamroll Burnley off the back of their two recent strong home performances.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-0 Burnley

Result: Tottenham 1-1 Burnley
