Ben Brereton Diaz Signs One-Year Contract Extension at Blackburn Rovers

Ben Brereton Diaz has signed a new one-year contract extension to stay at Blackburn Rovers until June 2023. 

Brereton Diaz first joined Blackburn in August 2018 on an initial loan deal from Nottingham Forest, which was converted into a permanent transfer during that season’s January transfer window.

The Chile international went on to only score nine goals in 88 appearances across his first three seasons at Ewood Park, before enjoying a breakthrough 2021-22 campaign where he scored 22 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions with three assists as well.

His contract however was set to be expire at end of this season as he looked set to follow manager, Tony Mowbray plus fellow players, Joe Rothwell and Bradley Johnson out of the door upon expiration of their contracts this summer.

Rovers consequently have decided to renew Brereton Diaz’s contract and released the following statement; ‘Rovers have activated the one-year option in Ben Brereton Diaz’s contract, which was due to expire at the end of next month.

‘The 23-year-old, who joined Rovers from Nottingham Forest in August 2018, now remains under contract at Ewood Park until June 30th 2023.’

Brereton’s success this season culminated in him being crowned the Players’ Player of the Year at the end of season awards, as well as voted Junior Rovers’ Player of the Year by the club’s young supporters to cap off a strong campaign for the 23 year-old.

Rovers are yet to agree new contracts with Ryan Nyambe, Jacob Davenport and Darragh Lenihan with discussions still ongoing, ahead of their player retainment list coming out within the next week.

Blackburn finished the 2021-22 Championship season in eighth place after seeing a promotion challenge fade throughout the second-half of the season, amidst various injury issues for key players including; Brereton Diaz, Reda Khadra and Bradley Dack amongst others.

On the international stage, Brereton Diaz has netted four goals in 12 appearances across all competitions for Chile.
